Canadians Recycled Over 6.8 Million KG of Batteries in 2024

Way to go, Canada! You have a lot to be proud of.

In 2024, Canadians recycled over 6.8 million kilograms of used batteries through the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program, marking a 17% jump from 2023.

And that’s not the only exciting news. In 2024, the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program took major steps forward, introducing North America’s first “smart” battery containers, expanding battery recycling to Nova Scotia, and teaming up with Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair.

“Recycling used batteries is an effective and easy way for all of us to help protect our environment,” said Christine Sinclair, Ambassador of the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program. “By adopting responsible recycling habits and working together as a team, Canadians are building a sustainable future for generations to come.”

Why Does Battery Recycling Matter?

They may be small, but used batteries can have a big impact. If they end up in landfills, their chemicals can harm the environment. But when recycled properly, these batteries get a second life – valuable metals are recovered and reused, reducing the need for mining and helping conserve natural resources.

Recycling Batteries is Easier than Ever!

With nearly 15,000 drop-off locations across Canada, recycling your used batteries has never been more convenient. From hardware stores and electronics retailers to grocery stores, municipal depots, and libraries, a safe and responsible recycling option is always nearby.

And we are not stopping there! We are continually expanding our network, working to add even more drop-off locations to make battery recycling even more accessible across Canada. Our goal is to ensure that no matter where you live, recycling your used batteries is always simple and hassle-free.

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going!

Got old batteries gathering dust in a junk drawer, garage or office? Don’t let them sit – recycle them today! Every battery recycled helps protect the environment and keeps valuable materials in use.

Let’s make 2025 an even bigger year for battery recycling, and help keep Canada clean and green for future generations.
