COLLECT: Kickstart Your Battery Recycling Journey

In our modern world, batteries are unsung heroes, providing essential power for the devices that keep us entertained, safe and our lives running smoothly.

However, batteries contain metal and chemical components that can harm the environment if they end up in landfill.

Some of these batteries, including Lithium-Ion, can also pose a fire risk if disposed of improperly.

Thankfully, there is a simple solution. Just recycle your batteries to minimize your carbon footprint, stay battery-safe and make a positive impact.

HOW TO GET STARTED

One of the many benefits of recycling your batteries is that it’s easy to do it over an extended period of time. By simply collecting and storing your used batteries in a safe and convenient manner, you can then easily drop them off when and where it’s most convenient for you.

So, instead of tossing used batteries into the trash, designate a specific bin or container for battery recycling. Make sure your container is:

  • Non-metal – plastic and glass containers are great choices
  • Clean of any metal debris or oily food residue

It doesn’t need to be complicated. Simply re-purpose old tomato sauce or peanut butter jars, or even used take-out containers to store your used batteries.

Label your home-made battery container clearly and place it in an easily accessible area in your home.

But remember, keep your battery container out of reach of small children under five.

Consider having multiple collection points, such as in the kitchen, home office, or garage, to make it convenient for everyone in your household to participate.

CHECK FOR CORROSION REGULARLY

Batteries have a tendency to corrode when left for long periods.

We recommend checking your devices every three months to avoid potential damage. Set up reminders on your phone or calendar to check your smoke detectors, toys and remote controls for depleted batteries.

Adding battery drop off dates around spring cleaning, holiday decoration plans or even the start of a new school semester can all be great ways to check for or collect used batteries.

You can also integrate battery collection into your existing recycling routine by making it a part of your weekly or monthly recycling process.

Some great dates to gather batteries include:

  • Around the new year, when putting away holiday decorations and toys
  • In Spring, when clocks change and while doing spring clean up
  • In Summer, after returning from camping trips
  • During the Fall, when clocks change and while putting away Halloween decorations

FAMILY FUN WITH A PURPOSE

Get the whole family involved, to establish good habits early. Make it fun by rewarding kids for their contributions or organize a friendly competition to see who can collect the most batteries.

While battery recycling may seem like a small step, its impact on the environment is significant. By implementing practical collection strategies, we can all play a part in reducing waste and protecting our planet for future generations.

So, roll up your sleeves, get collecting, and make a positive difference, one battery at a time.
