Why recycle battery-powered products?
Deep inside that disposable electric toothbrush you use every day, or a child’s rechargeable toy or tablet, lies a battery that can pose safety risks if disposed of improperly.
Electronic devices that contain batteries should NEVER be placed into the trash or your regular recycling bin, as they can be damaged in trucks, and potentially cause fires, endangering staff at waste and recycling facilities.
These electronic devices need to be recycled properly, at specifically designated recycling locations.

The good news is that in Quebec, you can safely and conveniently recycle battery-powered products – with batteries weighing less than 5 kg – at over 275 Ecocentres and municipal waste facilities across the province.
To make recycling simple and convenient, we accept a wide range of battery-powered products, whether they have built-in or removable batteries.

Prepare your battery-powered products for recycling
Before dropping off your battery-powered products for recycling, take a moment to prepare them safely. For devices that may store personal information or images, clear any data and remove memory cards before recycling.
If a battery appears swollen, leaking, or damaged, place the product in a container with non-flammable material, such as sand or kitty litter, and bring it to an Ecocentre for safe handling.

Some battery-powered products have batteries that can be easily removed, while others may have batteries buried deep inside.
Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! accepts both types of devices in Quebec, to help recover and recycle their components, including their batteries.
Can’t remove the batteries? No problem! Just drop off the entire device for recycling.
