Get ready! The Battery Blitz School Mission Contest is coming this spring to Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
The contest will run between March 3rd and April 11th, 2025 and schools will compete within their own province to win cash prizes. It’s a fun way for students to take an active role in preserving their environment.
Battery Collection boxes will be sent to registered schools, and students are encouraged to bring in their used batteries.
Once all batteries are collected, we will announce the winners in June.
You can help support your child’s school by following the 3 steps of safe battery recycling.
- Collect: Gather your used dry cell batteries under 5KG into a non-metal container.
- Protect: Tape over terminals of lithium, rechargeable and alkaline batteries 9V or higher.
- Drop Off: Drop off batteries in Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! collection boxes at designated locations in your child’s school.

To send batteries to school, follow these simple instructions:
- Protect their terminals using tape (electrical/duct/packing).
- Place them in a non-metal container or plastic bag that can be brought back to school to give them a chance to get a second life.
Some batteries need to be protected to prevent the risk of sparks. This includes:
- Rechargeable batteries
- Lithium
- Alkaline batteries 9V or higher
Protecting terminals is easy and quick. Choose one of the following methods:
- Cover the battery ends with adhesive tape (electrical, duct, or packing tape).
- Place the battery in its own individual plastic bag. Due to plastic waste, we recommend only using this method for large batteries, or if you do not have access to electrical tape or packing tape.
Prizes vary by province. Your school has a chance to win some amazing prizes, ranging from $500 to $5,000, depending on province and placement. You can learn more here.
