By now, we hope you have completed step one in your battery recycling journey by collecting your used batteries in a non-metal container. And congratulations if you’ve also completed step two by protecting their terminals to avoid sparks.
But now your batteries have been sitting in a jar for a while and you’re wondering when to take action. It’s time to Drop Off.
It’s important not to store used batteries in your home for too long, where they can become corroded. Whether you use a lot of batteries or just a few, we recommend dropping them off at least every three months to prevent corrosion and battery leakage.

HELPFUL REMINDERS FOR DROPPING OFF BATTERIES
Make battery recycling a regular habit by dropping off your batteries when the seasons change, or by using these special occasions as reminders:
- New Year: After the holidays, collect used batteries from decorations and toys and drop them off for recycling.
- April is Earth Month: Earth Month is a perfect time to take action for our environment. Drop off your batteries to make a meaningful contribution.
- Canada Day: Show your country some love by protecting its beautiful landscape. When you get back from that long weekend camping trip, collect used batteries from flashlights and devices and drop them off at your local retailer.
- October is Circular Economy Month: Support Canada’s Circular Economy by recycling your batteries and keeping valuable materials in circulation.
WHERE TO DROP OFF YOUR USED BATTERIES

Here are a few common places where you can find our collection boxes and containers:
- Retail Stores: Many hardware, electronics, grocery and drug stores have battery drop-off boxes. Look for our Smart Containers and collection boxes near the entrance or at customer service.
- Recycling Depots: Some provinces such as British Columbia and Saskatchewan have designated recycling depots where you can conveniently drop off your used batteries along with items such as plastic containers and jars.
- Public Libraries: Many libraries display our battery drop-off boxes as part of their community recycling programs. Next time you pick up a new book, bring along your used batteries!
- Waste Depots: Most communities have designated areas for household hazardous waste. Drop off your batteries along with paint, light bulbs and other materials. Check with your city’s waste management office for details.
