Game On! City of Hamilton Elevates Its Battery Recycling Game

Battery recycling in Hamilton is now easier – and more fun for residents of all ages, thanks to the partnership between the City of Hamilton and Recycle Your Batteries, Canada!

New joint initiatives the partners are launching in 2025 include:

  • A unique and interactive educational zone in the City’s Waste Education Room
  • Distribution of individual battery collection cubes to Hamilton residents
  • New municipal battery drop-off sites, equipped with Recycle Your Batteries, Canada!  Smart Containers

Educational Zone

A new interactive battery recycling education zone is now located in the City’s Waste Education Room. It features a battery-themed chalkboard that illustrates the battery recycling journey.

However, the main attraction is a three-screen interactive display that allows kids to have fun playing a video game called “GO SMARTY.” In the game, kids collect batteries for recycling using a character based on the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! signature “Smart Container”.

Schools can register to visit the education Centre on the city website

Home Collection Cubes

The educational initiatives are not confined to the classroom, however. Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! and the City of Hamilton are also collaborating to create awareness of battery recycling with a batterythemed bus as well as the distribution of educational battery collection cubes. In Hamilton, thousands of cubes are set to be distributed. Every child who visits the education room will receive one, and even more will be shared at community events.

New drop-off locations across Hamilton

Recycling your batteries has never been easier in Hamilton, thanks to the expansion of accessible drop-off locations. Twenty new drop-off locations are opening across the city in public libraries, municipal services centres and recycling centres.

You can find a drop-off location near you with our online locator

Why is it important to recycle your batteries?

Batteries contain materials that can harm the environment if thrown in the trash. Batteries can also become damaged in trucks and cause fires at waste processing facilities if disposed of improperly.

Recycling them properly protects the community and recovers precious resources that can be reused to create new products, supporting a healthy Circular Economy.

Thanks to the City of Hamilton

Since 2020, the Collaboration between the City of Hamilton and the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program has resulted in the safe collection and recycling of more than 300,000 kilograms of used household batteries, including nearly 60,000 kg in 2024 alone.

Hamilton, this project is taking shape because of you. Thank you for being part of this change!
